I was working on my “Clark Kent” article and suddenly remembered that I had started a “Clark Kent vs. Hercules” comparison at the beginning of Season 10 and never finished it.  So I thought it could serve as an appetizer for the main event. XD Enjoy!

The Measure of a True Hero

In so many ways I can compare Hercules to Superman, but after rewatching Lazarus it hit home for me. Smallville approaches the right places of the movie. "What is the measure of a true hero?"

From all its adaptations, the one I like the most is Disney’s Hercules. He’s presented as an adopted farmboy, who doesn’t fit in within normal people, and is looking for his true origins and purpose.  Sounds familiar?

One of my favorite parts is when a young Hercules visits the Temple of the Gods and talks to his father.  Zeus tells him that he needs to be a HERO to be able to return home.  In so many ways Jor-El has counseled Clark what to do to become a hero, yet he does not follows his guidance.  He leaves before completing his training, perceives him as an imposition rather than a father and defies him by doing the opposite of what he’s told. The reward for this future hero, the Superman suit (and what it symbolizes) kept in the Fortress of Solitude.

Lazarus opening scene can be compared to when that same Hercules, now made a man and a “hero”, returns after saving so many people, claiming that he should be entitled to go home.  Zeus advises him that he is not quite there yet and, somewhat disappointed, leaves him alone to think what makes a “true hero”.  Smallville presents a parallel reality, when Clark is edging his death, with a disappointed Jor-El addressing Clark.  He is confronted by the error of his ways and is presented with his own tombstone.  Clark has what it takes to be a hero, Jor-El doesn’t doubt it, but he needs to do it right. "Look inside your heart."

To contrast, and complement that father figure, Jonathan appears at the en of the episode encouraging him, telling him how proud he is of the man he’s become. Jonathan is pushing him to look past the mistakes of the past and take the second chance he’s given, to be the greatest hero the world has ever known.  "A True Hero."

Another plotline that is also similar is the love story.  In Hercules, the “weakness” is the girl, because they are in love. In Smallville, back in Savior, Clark is not able to complete his training due to thoughts of Lois, albeit in Lazarus she is the one who walks away for him to become Earth ultimate’s savior.  She is able to sacrifice her love for him for the greater good.

On a side note, I have to point how much Megan resembles Lois.  The girl is denying she is in love with Hercules to the end, so much like Lois did with Clark.  She is opinionated, strong, independent and a magnet for trouble.  On the softer side, they have both suffered because they loved the wrong people and are capable of giving their lives for “the one”.  To ice the cake, Meg calling Hercules names has Lois written all over.  And last but not least, in the end, she was the KEY for him to become the hero he was meant to be.

I’m sure there are a lot of other analogous scenes and characters, but I just wanted to point some of the most relevant ones (and, of course, leave you wanting to watch the movie).

"A true hero isn't measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart."
